Norco

Norco is a combination drug that combines two pain-relieving medications.

  • Hydrocodone acts as an opioid agonist. It attaches itself to mu-opioid receptors in the brain, reducing your pain.
  • Acetaminophen acts as an analgesic. It can reduce pain by stopping the production of certain chemicals.

Serious side effects

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

  • Dangerously Slow Breathing: Trouble breathing; blue-colored lips, toes, or fingers
  • Overdose (accidental overdose): slow breathing, extreme sleepiness, and slow heartbeat. Upper right-sided stomach discomfort, dark urine, cold, clammy, or yellowed skin.
  • Withdrawal symptoms from opioids: Anxiety, restlessness, and suicidal thoughts. Runny nose, sweating, wide pupils, chills, sweating.
  • Severe allergic or skin reaction: rash or hives; blistering or peeling of the skin; shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or feeling warm suddenly

As your body becomes accustomed to the medication, you may experience fewer side effects. If you experience any of these symptoms, or if they worsen, let your doctor know immediately.

You and your provider will determine the best dose of Norco for you. It’s best to use the lowest possible dose for the shortest time to manage your pain.

There are different strengths of acetaminophen and hydrocodone in the liquids and tablets. Ask your provider if you are unsure which Norco product (hydrocodone/acetaminophen) you use and how to use it.

  • Generally, the typical starting dose for adults is 5 mg/325 mg (hydrocodone/acetaminophen) by mouth every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain.
